Critical Red Alert from New York Bowhunters

The New York Bowhunters have posted a “Critical Red Alert” on their website to alert bowhunters in New York about the state’s proposed five-year deer management plan.

According to New York Bowhunters, the proposed draft will result in a net loss of tags for special season hunters, will insert a youth firearm season and then a muzzleloading season in the middle of the archery-only season, and would place most of the deer management burdens on the special season hunters without asking regular season hunters to contribute to the cause.… Read the rest »

New Hampshire to Issue Special Deer Permits

New Hampshire will issue up to 4,000 special permits to allow hunters to take more antlerless deer in the southeastern part of the state, in an effort to sustain the health of the state’s deer population by reducing its numbers.

Montana FWP to Discuss Elk Archery Hunting Regs

A working group of 10 members plus a representative of Montana’s Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission will meet at least 4 times over the next 3 months to hammer out recommendations for elk archery hunting regulations in the Missouri Breaks area. The group includes hunting outfitters, landowners, and both archery and rifle hunters, according to an FWP official.

FWP began to focus on fine-tuning its archery hunting regulations in 2008, after receiving complaints from hunters that bowhunters were overharvesting trophy bulls and driving elk from public lands onto private property before the general big-game rifle hunting season began.

But other landowners, outfitters and hunters said the limits put on archery permits, especially in hunting districts where elk populations are above targets, is unfair and creates an economic hit in times that are tough already.

The group’s first meeting is set for 1pm on July 25 at the FWP office in … Read the rest »

The city council will hold the first of 3 readings of the proposed ordinance on July 21.… Read the rest »

Duluth Rejects Bowhunting Ordinance Change

The Duluth City Council rejected an ordinance on Monday that would have required bowhunters in the city’s annual bow hunt to shoot two antlerless deer instead of just one before taking a buck.

The 2 council members who supported the ordinance said they were concerned that the bowhunt was being run as a “big buck” contest, but representatives of the Arrowhead Bowhunters Alliance told councilors that the bow hunt is the most successful in the country and that the council should not try to fix a program that isn’t broken.

Duluth still needs to decrease its deer population, according the council president. The council approved a related ordinance to allow hunters to hunt within 400 feet of a building, so long as they have written permission from all nearby property owners.… Read the rest »

New Jersey Relaxes Bowhunting Distance Requirements

New Jersey is now permitting bow hunters to shoot within 150 feet of a dwelling, reduced from the 450 feet previously required.

This change recognizes that the arrow range and trajectories of bowhunting are considerably different from those of hunting with firearms, and acknowledges that bowhunters don’t need to be subjected to the same restrictions.
