Love Triangles and Bowhunting

Bull Elk Love Triangle

There’s an interesting account in the Portland Examiner about an elk hunter who found himself in the center of a 3-bull triangle when 3 bull elk responded to his cow call:

A love triangle is not so bad when you are talking about calling in bull elk…  If an Oregon bow hunter is fortunate enough to find himself in the midst of one this season, remembering the following story may help him connect.

Two Harbors (MN) Considers City Deer Bowhunt

Council members in Two Harbors, Minn., had a second reading of an in-city archery deer hunt ordinance.

The ordinance is similar to the one presented to the board for a first reading. There were some changes in wording to allow the police chief to designate someone to carry out tasks associated with the hunt. Also, the public safety committee had a map of possible hunting zones available for council members to look over. The third reading of the ordinance will be at the next city council meeting July 25. If the ordinance is passed, there will be an archery hunt in Two Harbors this fall.

The local Drop Tine chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association is still looking for input from anyone who may be interested in a fall archery hunt in Two Harbors. They are asked to email their name, phone number, and email address to info@droptinechapter.com or … Read the rest »

Montana Approves Wolf Archery Season for 2011

Montana’s Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission has approved a wolf archery season, to run from Sept. 3rd though Oct. 16, 2011, coinciding with the state’s deer and elk archery seasons.

Montana officials reported that the total wolf quota for 2011 of 220 is expected to reduce the wolf population by about 25%, to approximately 425 wolves.

Wildlife officials documented that a minimum of 566 wolves, in 108 verified packs, and 35 breeding pairs inhabited the state at the end of 2010. The congressional measure passed this spring that removed gray wolves from the list of endangered species in Montana, Idaho, and parts Oregon, Washington and Utah was challenged in federal district court in Missoula in May. A final court ruling hasn’t been issued.

Montana FWP to Discuss Elk Archery Hunting Regs

A working group of 10 members plus a representative of Montana’s Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission will meet at least 4 times over the next 3 months to hammer out recommendations for elk archery hunting regulations in the Missouri Breaks area. The group includes hunting outfitters, landowners, and both archery and rifle hunters, according to an FWP official.

FWP began to focus on fine-tuning its archery hunting regulations in 2008, after receiving complaints from hunters that bowhunters were overharvesting trophy bulls and driving elk from public lands onto private property before the general big-game rifle hunting season began.

But other landowners, outfitters and hunters said the limits put on archery permits, especially in hunting districts where elk populations are above targets, is unfair and creates an economic hit in times that are tough already.

The group’s first meeting is set for 1pm on July 25 at the FWP office in … Read the rest »

Colorado Big-Game Licenses Available

Rocky Mountain Bull Elk

Colorado’s big-game season starts in less than 2 months, and the Colorado Division of Wildlife wants to make sure hunters know that they can begin purchasing unlimited over-the-counter big game licenses for elk beginning July 12. A limited number of OTC licenses for black bear will also become available at that time.

Elk hunters who missed the draw or who didn’t daw their first choice can use the OTC elk licenses to get a chance to hunt bull or cow elk during archery season, or bull elk during the 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons, in many game management units in Colorado.

With elk population that is the largest of any herd in North America — with approximately 283,000 elk on 23 million acres of public land — Colorado offers elk seasons from August through January. Colorado is the only state that offers non-residents and residents the opportunity to purchase unlimited … Read the rest »

Duluth Rejects Bowhunting Ordinance Change

The Duluth City Council rejected an ordinance on Monday that would have required bowhunters in the city’s annual bow hunt to shoot two antlerless deer instead of just one before taking a buck.

The 2 council members who supported the ordinance said they were concerned that the bowhunt was being run as a “big buck” contest, but representatives of the Arrowhead Bowhunters Alliance told councilors that the bow hunt is the most successful in the country and that the council should not try to fix a program that isn’t broken.

Duluth still needs to decrease its deer population, according the council president. The council approved a related ordinance to allow hunters to hunt within 400 feet of a building, so long as they have written permission from all nearby property owners.… Read the rest »
