A recurve bow is one on which the bow string contacts the back side of the bow when at rest. Recurve bows have been around for centuries, and were used by Attila the Hun's armies in the fifth century. Some ancient recurves were composite bows, using wood and bone frames.
Bear archery introduced a modern production recurve bow in 1953, and recurves were used by bow hunters until the advent of the modern compound bow about 20 years later. Traditionalists still like the simplicity of the recurve bow, and their effectiveness, while not on par with a modern compound bow, still cannot be denied when one looks at the history of military campaigns and hunters who have used recurve bows.
